all about the hunt.

Thursday, September 2nd, 2010

It was a typical Monday afternoon. I was just entering my 3:00pm slump, which is usually remedied with a Sugar Free Go Girl and a pack of mini red vines. As I walked back from the market with my goodies in tow, I couldn’t shake that feeling.

The feeling of blah.

Granted, it was a Monday, which are typically blah to begin with. But this was a different blah, one that craved a solution. As I sat at my desk chugging my Go Girl, I began to ponder what was wrong with me. I wasn’t tired (thanks to the Go Girl), or hungry (thanks to the red vines). Where was this blahness coming from? I just wanted to feel alive. I wanted to be inspired. I wanted to go somewhere and do something. And then it hit me.

I wanted to go to Goodwill.

Now I realize for most people, Goodwill is the last place they want to go after a long day at work. Probably because those people are incapable of seeing the potential in someone else’s unwanted treasures. But you see, that’s the beauty of the process. It’s easy to go to the mall and pick out items you like. They are right smack in front of you, glistening in all their brand-new glory, screaming “buy me buy me!!”

But I ask you—where’s the fun in that? Where’s the challenge? Where’s the HUNT?

Goodwill, on the other hand, is where the magic happens. It is full of treasures waiting to be rescued, and full of nothings to turn into somethings. It’s all about the hunt. The adventure. The risk of not finding anything at all. The chance of finding everything at once. Who knows what will happen? It’s Goodwill! The possibilities are practically endless.

And if you’re lucky, you just might find a $5 dress and a $3 globe to bring home…

thrifting + bellinis.

Tuesday, June 1st, 2010

My darling friend Liz arranged a perfect day of thrifting on Saturday and boy did I make out like a bandit. We hunted for treasures, sipped on bellinis, and enjoyed the gorgeous weather strolling downtown. Here’s a little peak of my favorite finds:

{ the perfect romper / playsuit. }
{ lovely blouse with lovely buttons. }

{ lightweight summer sweater. }
{ this was too pretty to pass up. }

{ daisy hatbox. }

Also purchased but not pictured: a wooden bicycle plant holder, a lovely green high waisted skirt, and a perfectly sized cross-body brown leather bag. Crimson and Clover is without a doubt, my new favorite shop in town. I wanted every single piece of jewelry in that store and had to practice a ridiculous amount of self-control to not buy all of it. You’re welcome Brett.

But next time, I make no promises. Consider yourself warned.

stitch swap.

Monday, March 15th, 2010

I don’t have a sister, but I’ve always wanted one. You know, someone to fight play with and steal borrow clothes from. Reality check: I have a brother, and we don’t exactly wear the same size. Good thing I have a plethora of stylish friends in Sacramento who are willing to swap clothes with me.

Want to join us? Consider yourself invited.

$5 cover charge will be donated to Relay for Life, and leftover clothing will go to the St. John’s Shelter for Women and Children. April 3rd—swap until you drop. You know you want to.

Don’t forget to check out our Examiner article here.

antiquing.

an·tiqu·ing [an-teek-ing]–verb (used without object) to shop for or collect antiques.

Welcome to my new favorite pastime.

Last Sunday, Brett and I went on a lovely Valentine’s Day excursion to the Second Sunday Antique Fair on 21st and X street. Not really knowing what to expect, we arrived with one crisp $20.00 in hand and no plan whatsoever. I imagined I would find all sorts of treasures, and my dreams quickly met the same reality. Old typewriters, rotary phones, vintage dresses, oh my! It was quite a sight to be seen.

Of course you have to take the good with the bad. The bad being things like dirty marbles retailing for $1.00 a pop (really?!) and an ugly pair of $300 outdoor pink flamingos. But if you are a patient treasure hunter like myself, you will not leave empty handed. And let’s be honest—isn’t hunting half the fun? Two feathers and one vintage suitcase later, I was well on my way to making a couple of new headbands, and a lovely suitcase end table.

If you heart vintage suitcases as much as I do, check out my friday favorites post from a few weeks ago.

My sweet friend Suzanne also scored at the Antique Fair and purchased a lovely vintage camera. Read about it here.

Happy antiquing!

(yes, it’s a real verb—check the dictionary)

$20.00 peep-toes.

Monday, November 2nd, 2009

Confession: I am addicted to shoes.

What can I say?  Carrie Bradshaw is my fashion idol and I wish I could win the lottery for the sole (no pun intended) purpose of owning an entire closet of designer pumps.  *sigh*

imageUntil then, I shall continue to scour the continent for the best deals possible in hopes of maintaining a collection of acceptably stylish footwear that does not bring about financial hardship.

Enter: the Target shoe department.

I hardly ever venture to Target with the intention to buy shoes.  Today I was at Target to buy shampoo and milk.  But that’s the problem with Target, you see.  I go there for paper towels and birthday cards, yet cannot seem to tear my eyes off the $6.00 leggings and $20.00 peep-toe pumps.   When a shoe box enters my cart beside the Kashi cereal, I hardly even notice it anymore.  In fact, throw a bottle of hairspray and a new package of sponges on top of it, and the shoebox disappears altogether!

Well done Target, well done.  You proudly posted your impressive $20.00 limited time offer placard and I gave in to you yet once again.

Until next time….I suppose I’ll be donning these bad boys to work tomorrow.
