goodwill goodness.

Wednesday, June 30th, 2010

Saturday I had seven whole hours to myself. Seven. Whole. Hours. To. Myself.

It was BLISS.  This magical day consisted of: yoga in the park, basking in the backyard sunshine while reading Real Simple mag slash inhaling chips and salsa (please don’t judge), one long cool shower, a nap, getting pedicures with my girlfriend, and a miniature trip to Goodwill on my way home. Picked up a couple treasures, and called it a day!

{ nautical wedges: $4.99 }

{ sweet kitchen canisters: $0.99 each }

{ aluminum watering can: $0.49 }

I also fell in LOVE with this dresser, and convinced hubs to come back with me on Sunday to pick it up. We are redecorating our “entertainment alcove” and I thought this would be a lovely TV stand. We can use the drawers for DVDs, remotes, photo albums, etc. Isn’t it pretty?! (Please pardon the crappy iPhone photo).

{ antique dresser: $70 }

p.s. On the 4th of July everything at Goodwill is 50% off! See you there?

make it monday: key holder.

Monday, June 28th, 2010

Friday night Liz and Erin came over for a lovely evening of crafts + cocktails. And by cocktails, I mean three failed attempts at raspberry mojitos before we finally got it right. Note to self: sweetened lime juice is an imperative ingredient. Whoops!

We decided to make decorative key holders, based on a lovely tutorial from Design Sponge.

It was slightly more time-consuming than we had anticipated, but a cute project nonetheless. My bottom ribbon has a tiny lump in it from being wrapped around cardboard, but it will smooth out over time. Now I just need to find some extra keys to hang. Ta-da!

My next to-do project? A more sophisticated version of this adorable paper bird painting.

a dreamer.

Thursday, June 24th, 2010

I see beauty, everywhere I go and everywhere I look.

You see, I’m a dreamer, and dreamers are easily distracted by beauty.

Some might say it’s a way of life.

I notice beauty the most when I’m behind the lens of a camera. Staring, focusing, soaking it all in. It never ceases to amaze me how even the simplest of things can look beautiful in a photograph. Sometimes I see things in photograph form, even when I’ve carelessly left my camera behind. As if my curious green eyes turn into a camera of their own…

Blink. Snap. Memorize.

How is everything so beautiful?

Photographs have the unrivaled ability to capture emotion perfectly—love, wonder, joy. As an emotional creature, perhaps I appreciate that slightly more than others.

I have recently come to the realization that few things in life bring me as much joy as creative ventures. Writing and photography happen to be at the top of my list at the moment, but really any project requiring creativity will do. Any little task involving a combination of words and colors will suffice.

Sometimes I feel as though my heart and brain are going to burst with pent up creative energy. So many words waiting to be written. So much beauty waiting to be captured.

Wouldn’t it be wonderful if we could all do what brings us the most joy instead of the most reliable paycheck? Every day, all day? No offices, no desks, no high heels. Just you, your passion, and whatever you need to make it happen.

One day, some day, I hope to figure out how to turn that dream into a reality.

What’s your dream?

{p.s. this is my 100th post, hooray!}

summertime.

Tuesday, June 22nd, 2010

Summer is here. Oh, happy happy day.

A new season. The perfect time to open the door, walk outside, and change yourself.

It’s time to read a book, lie in the grass, and feel the sunshine on your face. Turn off the TV and find any excuse to walk somewhere for some reason. Listen to the birds chirping. If you listen carefully, you can hear them talking.

Ride your bike. Not because it’s good for the environment, but because it’s good for you. Eat ice cream while it melts, and slowly sip your lemonade. Savor everything that feels summer. Plant a garden in your backyard and watch the worms squirm. Leave them be; they like it there.

Look at the clouds and find the shapes. Put your toes in the grass, the sand, the dirt. Anything that squishes. It’s good for you. Twirl until you’re dizzy and stare through the branches of the trees as you fall down.

Run, fast. Laugh with your friends. Pack a picnic. Hike, somewhere tall. Wear sunscreen. Write down your story. Bask in the glory of this time of year. It’s summer. A new season. The perfect time to do something.
