favorite posts of 2012.

I have this thing where I hate reading my old blog posts. Is anyone else plagued by this?

I’m hyper critical of myself and my writing, and if I read a blog post just one week after I publish it, I immediately cringe and think of all the ways I could have written it better. I always have to be moving forward, always improving, always getting better. Brett on the other hand, loves to read my old blog posts. I’ll catch him from time to time sitting on his computer reading posts from last year and saying things like, “Hey remember the time you wrote about_________?” I roll my eyes and say yeah and think about how terrible that post was and how much I wish I could just go through my whole blog archives and delete half of them.

As I’m typing this, I realize how ridiculous I sound. That’s the whole point of this blog, right? It’s a place to write and remember things, so when Everett’s 15 and talking back to me, I can pull up this post and reminisce about the days when he was so tiny and his head smelled so good and everything was so hard but so magical at the same time.

In an effort to get over this hating-my-old-blog-posts thing, I spent some time this weekend reading through posts from 2012. And you know what? They weren’t all terrible. Some were terrible, but not all. In fact, some of them were even fun to read again. These were my personal favorite posts from this year, in no particular order:

blogging about blogging

a simple Christmas

writers vs. bloggers

everett’s birth story

girl crush

unfrozen

we met on twitter before that was cool

for gene

dear callie

a love letter to my body

september 16th

saving my life, right now

As we bid farewell to 2012 and welcome 2013 with open arms, I am excited to continue sharing pieces of my life here. Thank you for reading, for showing up, and for offering encouragement through comments and e-mails, especially during this past year as I became a mother.

Do you blog? Link me up to your favorite post of 2012 in the comments so I can read it and say hi ;)

  3. Happy new year! Thanks for the roundup. I like when bloggers do these because it helps me weed out the good stuff I might’ve missed – & it seems like I missed a lot this year!

My absolute favorite post of yours this past year is the Unfrozen one. It is so inspiring. I blog, but I am not a writer so yeah. ;) But I will definitely be reading the other blogs linked in these comments.

I am pretty critical of my old posts, too! So glad to have found your blog this year. I actually found you through “Get Off My Internets” (which I sometimes read because, well, it’s good to see what readers are irked by in blogs, to a point anyway) – your site was listed on a “Stay On My Internets” thread and I thought, I should check it out, and voila :)

I love your love letter to your body!!

My favorite post this year was my first post on my new website (prior content was migrated from my old site but this was the first original post): http://byjacki.com/2012/09/carrie-bradshaw-moment-getting-what-you-need-in-relationships/

my year was marked by living in uganda. not exactly where i pictured myself at 26, but oh-so-grateful i listened to the Lord & to be stretched in this way. here, i write about what has probably defined my life the most – becoming a foster mamma in africa: http://www.linden-tree.blogspot.com/2012/11/loving-in-gap.html

thank you for encouraging me to choose gratefulness. love to you & yours.

It’s so funny because Luke does the same thing that Brett does with old blog posts! We’ll be sitting on the couch and he’ll pull up an old post and say remember this one… I’m like “ahhh I can’t look at that, embarassing, put it away!”. It is fun to see how I’ve grown & evolved through blogging though!

I just posted this morning on my highlights of 2012 with some favorite moments/posts this past year: http://www.littlemissholls.com/2012/12/2012-what-year.html

Happy New Year to the Gadd family! Can’t wait to see what 2013 brings!

I mean, I guess it’s good that we have supportive husbands/fiances, right? ;) Happy 2013 Holly! I can’t wait to see pictures of your beautiful wedding!

  9. Ashlee – I just loved your “Saving My Life” post. Everett is such a doll! Although you will undoubtedly pass through a few more difficult times as a mother, you will also have many, many joyous experiences to look forward to.

I haven’t blogged as much as I would have liked this past year. Our family has gone through so many changes… mostly good but some not-so-good. Here is one of my favorite posts from 2012. xo and happy new year!

Hi, there! First time commenting! The post from the last year that keeps me thinking is this one about the things I probably will and won’t do, but I do love this post about what my husband and I read at his sister’s wedding.

And thanks again for your awesome recommendations for my quick trip to Sacramento! I did a little recap of the trip here. Happy new year!

After quietly following your blog for so long, I *finally* got the courage to start my own. Thank you, and keep writing!

  13. Kiki says:

I hear you! I can’t stand re-reading some of my posts which is why it was so hard to choose which one to link to in my comment! Sometimes I even have debates with myself over whether or not to edit my old posts (to make them grammatically correct, flow better, etc.) or to leave them in their raw, original state. But after reading this post, I’m convinced to keep them as is. To have them there to remind me how much I’ve grown and who I’m becoming.

But seriously, I am so grateful to have discovered your blog this year. You push me to seek Him more, love others more, and write more (and write better, too!). I cannot wait to see what God has in store for you and your family this year! Happy 2013!

I love your blog! I had to take some time away to have a baby! Baby boy in late October and with a few medical emergencies afterwards…I am just finding some time to get back to reading yours :0) I do not have a blog but would love to start one only to document our family since my mommy brain is totally fried and can not remember anything these days. Any suggestions on how to get started or if you blog about this-I would love to read it! I also wonder if you mind that you are so public? I really have nothing to hide but then I know how things can get twisted and really I just want to do this to remember life as it is. BTW-I have to tell you that I too now have a fella that likes to save up for the poop storm and everytime I see that it has ooozed up to the front of the pjs I lauph and think about your post! If it was not for your post I think I would not see the humor in it-thank you for that! Happy New Year!

Oh lady, I love every single one of your posts. But I do know exactly what you mean. Reading over my old posts was a bit of torture almost and had me questioning why I said what I said in so many of them. I did make a post though with my favorites…
