five months old.

This kid. He smiles at me all day long. Don’t know what I’d do without him. Can you believe he’s almost SIX MONTHS OLD?! Me either.

Speaking of which, we start solid foods next month. Any tips, mommas?

Are you grinding your own? If you are the Baby Bullet system is awesome! And there are some wonderful books out there for ideas (super baby food, wholesome baby food guide …) and tips on what to introduce when.
One thing I learned the hard way? Introduce veggies for a good long while before inserting a fruit or sweetened grain. Introducing the sweeter first makes them turn their nose up at the vegetables!

I ended up making my own baby food and really it was not that bad. My friend suggested a book called Super Baby Food by Ruth Yaron. It has all you need to know about sterilizing, preping, making large quantities to freeze and how long they are good for and what to introduce at what month etc to avoid allergies. It is huge but you can skip to the section that pertains to how old your baby is. I loved it and found it very useful. I made the food in large batches, pureed and froze and it was so convenient to take out of the freezer to heat up. Good luck!

if you’re planning on making your own food, make sure you don’t start with the store-bought stuff; that was our mistake. we wanted to buy the gerber stuff and give our little guy a taste before we spent all that energy making our own, just in case he didn’t like a particular flavor. bad idea! once he got the gerber, he refused any of my homemade stuff. we think it was the texture; we never could get it as finely blended as gerber.

also, bananas constipate little ones. (in case you weren’t already aware.) c:

I made all of my son’s baby food and I loved doing it! It is definitely time consuming, but in the end so worth it because you know exactly what your kids are eating. Suprisingly, making your own baby food is very easy! By making your own food you are able to control the consistency of it to what your child can handle. As my son got older I made his food chunkier.
One tip: you don’t need to buy the fancy “baby food makers” that they sell in the store. The main tools I used were a food processer, hand mixer, steamer basket and ice cube trays (lots of them). Once the food was frozen I took them out of the ice cube trays and stored them in freezer bags for up to 3 months. Just make sure to write what fruit/veggie is in the bag so you don’t forget! Check out Barnes and Noble or any bookstore for baby food cookbooks. A lot of books have the same recipes so you just need to find one that suits your tastes.
Have fun, be patient and if he doesn’t like a food the first time don’t give up on it just try another time.

    Hey Ash and Everett –

Wow! His first tooth! I am going to miss his gummy smile but I am sure he will be just as cute with teeth. And just wanted to also state that bananas can be constipating. Since Everett only goes every 10 days you may want to stay away from bananas until he is more regular. And also agreed that starting with veggies is a good way to go.

    Love you, Mom

  15. um… i must know more about everett quitting the paci. roo has been refusing it lately. it’s kind of blowing my mind.

annnd. about solids? mostly, have fun. don’t stress about what will be his first food – he will eventually eat them all. make it if you want, but don’t feel bad if you buy jars. also, we love the squeeze spoons! less mess! good luck :)

Oh my! That is one precious smile! A-DOR-ABLE! I am not a mother but as a pediatric nurse I will tell you this, introduce one food every three days to ensure he does not have an allergic reaction. This way if he does, you know what it is. I also recommend introducing veggies first! Stay blessed.
