an·tiqu·ing [an-teek-ing]–verb (used without object) to shop for or collect antiques.
Welcome to my new favorite pastime.
Last Sunday, Brett and I went on a lovely Valentine’s Day excursion to the Second Sunday Antique Fair on 21st and X street. Not really knowing what to expect, we arrived with one crisp $20.00 in hand and no plan whatsoever. I imagined I would find all sorts of treasures, and my dreams quickly met the same reality. Old typewriters, rotary phones, vintage dresses, oh my! It was quite a sight to be seen.
Of course you have to take the good with the bad. The bad being things like dirty marbles retailing for $1.00 a pop (really?!) and an ugly pair of $300 outdoor pink flamingos. But if you are a patient treasure hunter like myself, you will not leave empty handed. And let’s be honest—isn’t hunting half the fun? Two feathers and one vintage suitcase later, I was well on my way to making a couple of new headbands, and a lovely suitcase end table.
If you heart vintage suitcases as much as I do, check out my friday favorites post from a few weeks ago.
My sweet friend Suzanne also scored at the Antique Fair and purchased a lovely vintage camera. Read about it here.
Happy antiquing!
(yes, it’s a real verb—check the dictionary)

I wouldn’t judge you even if antiquing wasn’t a real word, as the gyllenhammer family has a favorite pastime similar to yours, which they have unabashedly created their own word for- garagesailng. since the word is made up, spelling is up to the inclination of the giver, and I like to imagine a bit of swashbuckling fun mixed with my saturday morning treasure hunts.
love the extra photos of your great find! Now where are those photos of your freshly painted walls?!?
Ha! Tell those Gyllenhammer boys to keep their eyes open for vintage suitcases. I need at least two more to make a table! Photos of the walls are coming…I’m finishing up a small artsy project before I document the whole fiasco. They’ll be up soon
I’m glad you’ve caught the fever! I love the thrill of the hunt. If you want to try a big antique show, you can go to the old Navy base in Alameda. It happens the first Sunday of every month. It’s massive and cost about $10.00 to get in, but I’ve found some wonderful treasures there. Let us know if you want to go in the next couple of months. It’s always better to have more than one set of eyes on the lookout for that special find. <3
Ooooh good tip Rebecca! I’ll let you know next time we’re going to be in town on a first Sunday….
I love the Second Sunday antique fair! It can certainly be hit and miss, but I have scored some great finds over the past few years!
What a great find! My favourite find so far is my vintage jewellery box. It’s huge, dusty pink, and was $6! How can you go wrong? I’m so exited for my city to thaw out, we’re rabid garage salers (not a real verb lol) here and I want to get my hunting hat on.
